Thames River Sightseeing

Sign up for our email to enjoy London without spending a thing (as well as some options when you’re feeling flush). The river's path weaves through historic towns -- including Oxford, Windsor and Eton -- before passing through London and to the coast. All our boats are wheelchair, mobility scooter and pram accessible by ramp. All boats, except Star, Storm and Sky Clipper, have accessible toilets and larger boats have baby changing tables. Travelling by river is a great way for families to explore London differently. Save time and money, download the Thames Clippers Tickets app.

Anchored by St. Paul’s Cathedral, this marks the site of the city’s original Roman settlement and has since been transformed into a modern business district. Keep your eyes peeled for the Gherkin, London’s famous pickle-shaped skyscraper. Marking the end of the City of London is the iconic Tower Bridge and the imposing Tower of London. With the round-trip ticket, you’ll need to change boats at Westminster Pier for the return trip. Hi, my name is Valerie, and I fell in love with London on my first trip to the city way back in 2011.

In this post, you’ll learn the differences between cruise offerings and hopefully find the one that’s perfect for your upcoming London trip. No matter how you think about the Thames, it’s an important part of London and its history. Goods are still shipped up and down the river at all hours of the day and night, and passengers board boats to journey along its lengths too. In this post, I’ll cover the latter – since you may be considering a Thames cruise during your own London itinerary. Explore London's iconic landmarks from the serene Thames on a river cruise! Unravel the city's intricate history as you traverse from Roman origins to a modern metropolis, connecting its fragmented beauty aboard the delightful Clipper Riverboat.

Transit Cruises on the Thames

These days the Thames Clippers are better known as ‘Uber Boats’, not because they’re the most incredible boats but because, you guessed it, they’re sponsored by a taxi company. Sure, they don’t go very fast (trundling along at a very leisurely 30mph), but they’re a pretty underrated, cost-effective way to traverse the Thames. Alternatively, for more of a London river cruise, look to those lines that call in the capital.

You can also take one of the many transit cruises locals use to commute every day from different parts of the city. Bateaux dinner cruise is no ordinary cruise; it’s an experience. Bateaux combines Thames river sightseeing with elegant, unforgettable dinners and lunches. They offer exclusive seasonal voyages year-round and customized experiences for special occasions, such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and Easter.

Westminster Pier to Greenwich Pier

The Transport for London site has multiple pages about river travel, including The River Experience, with details of how to get to a number of popular attractions by boat. Thames River cruises operate regularly from the London Eye near the center of the city to the Royal Borough of Greenwich in South East London. Between the two ends are some of London’s best-known landmarks.

The ship also offers themed cruises, with a specific itinerary that includes a visit to Highclere Castle, setting for the television series "Downton Abbey." Turk Launches is one of the oldest companies you’re likely to come across in London. This family-run company has been in the riverboats scene for over 300 years. Their rides last 40 minutes and take you to explore the stunning stretch of the river Thames.

Magna Carta's cosy deckplan features four cabins each measuring about 200 square feet, with shower-only bathrooms. There's a saloon-bar, dining areas and sun deck with loungers and a hot tub. Optional excursions, including hot air balloon rides and golf, are extra. Most online searches for a London River cruise will turn up results for short sightseeing voyages on the section of the Thames from Greenwich to Westminster, or vice versa.

Our Hop On Hop Off Thames sightseeing cruise will take you from point A to B with comfort and in style. Instead of a usual tour’s drab history lessons and endless stream of tedious facts, why not try something a little more thrilling? The Thames RIB Experience is more like a rollercoaster than a classic sightseeing tour, and sees passengers jetted across the water at an impressive 45mph.

This is an amazing work of engineering and construction. Woolwich isn’t high on most tourists’ agendas, but if you like history, I would recommend the Royal Arsenal area. This was, for centuries, a key military establishment, housing the Royal Dockyard, the Royal Arsenal, the Royal Military Academy, and more. The broad River Thames enters from the west and curves its way through the metropolis to the North Sea.

Take in the best of London’s waterside viewpoints with our Thames River sightseeing cruise, from Tower Bridge Quay to Westminster. We pride ourselves on being a family-run business, ensuring every guest feels welcome the minute they step aboard our boats. Starting in 1999 with just one boat in operation, our fleet has grown exponentially to 20 high-speed Thames river boats, offering services from all major London piers every minutes. Our services cater for everyone from early morning commuters to night-time passengers. There are countless reasons to choose a London River Bus over any other form of transport – choose a Thames river cruise next time you need to travel through London.

The distinction between the River Bus and other boats can be confusing. The River Bus is part of the Transport for London system and accepts Oyster cards. Boats that don’t accept Oyster cards to board may still let you pay for a paper ticket using an Oyster card. I have always found the people working at the piers to be very helpful. You can use riverboats within the Transport for London River Bus system as part of your tourist day. The Westminster Pier to the Tower of London is a nice ride.
